The love of God is the message of Jesus Christ to all the nations of the world, that all may come to the knowledge of the truth and be saved.
Romans 5:8 [NIV]:
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
The death of Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary was not on the instance or condition of our love for God, but rather His love for us when we were in a state that was at variance with His nature. In other words, a righteous God going after men of sin that they maybe washed by the blood of the Lamb, and that He [Jesus Christ] may become a propitiation for the sins of men.
1 John 2:2 [NIV]:
He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
The essence of this sacrifice is predicated on the fact that during the era of the law which was a shadow of the glorious things to come, blood was used to purify almost everything and without blood, there was no forgiveness of sins.
Hebrews 9:22 [NIV]:
In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
The blood of bulls were used to atone for the sins of men during the era of the law, which was a constant repetitive action because it lacked the capacity to make perfect those who drew near to worship God.
Hebrew 10:1 [NLT]:
The old system under the law of Moses was only a shadow, a dim preview of the good things to come, not the good things themselves. The sacrifices under that system were repeated again and again, year after year, but they were never able to provide perfect cleansing for those who came to worship.
Moreover, it was impossible for the law to produce perfection for the worshippers who came before God, because the blood of bulls and goats could not take away sin, hence God could not be pleased by burnt offerings.
Hebrews 10:6 [NLT]:
with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased.
THINGS TO NOTE:
1. The Law which is the old convenant was a shadow of the New convenant in Jesus Christ. The law was a prelude to the grace of God.
Hebrews 7:19 [NLT]:
For the law never made anything perfect. But now we have confidence in a better hope, through which we draw near to God.
2. A righteous God cannot stand any trace of iniquity or unrighteousness hence the need for atonement with blood inorder to avert His judgement. The Law created sin consciousness as worshippers of God could not approach Him without the rememberance of their sins.
Hebrews 10:2 [NLT]:
If they could have provided perfect cleansing, the sacrifices would have stopped, for the worshipers would have been purified once for all time, and their feelings of guilt would have disappeared.
