The church in Macedonia was exhibiting clear acts of grace which they received from God, in finding it essential and of utmost priority to make provisions for the church in Jerusalem even when they did not have much.
2 Corinthians 8:1 [AMP]:
Now, brothers and sisters, we want to tell you about the grace of God which has been evident in the churches of Macedonia [awakening in them a longing to contribute]
They were in a season of their lives where they suffered a great distress whose culminative effect led to financial hardship, yet their joy was not diminished even in their poverty.
2 Corinthians 8:2 [AMP]:
for during an ordeal of severe distress, their abundant joy and their deep poverty [together] overflowed in the wealth of their lavish generosity.
This overflowing joy within them, gave them the mentality to look beyond the surrounding circumstances that have befallen them, to see the need to make provisions for others. Their circumstance defined poverty, but they did not allow the definition of their circumstance to affect their mentality. The book of Proverbs gives us the insight and differentiation between the mentality of the rich and the poor;
Proverbs 11:24 [AMP]:
There is the one who [generously] scatters [abroad], and yet increases all the more; And there is the one who withholds what is justly due, but it results only in want and poverty.
Furthermore, their acts of generosity as a church gave to them an account of wealth in their liberality, even when their physical conditions suggested differently. Paul the Apostle testifies that they gave according to their abilities and beyond it, which was of their free will.
2 Corinthians 8:3 [AMP]:
For I testify that according to their ability, and beyond their ability, they gave voluntarily,
The life style of the Macedonian church towards their fellow brethren in Jerusalem, reflects the life of Jesus Christ, which Paul the Apostle couldn't help but referenced it as thus;
2 Corinthians 8:9 [AMP]:
For you are recognizing [more clearly] the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ [His astonishing kindness, His generosity, His gracious favor], that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that by His poverty you might become rich (abundantly blessed).
However, the church in Macedonia made great provisions which exceeded the expectations of Paul the Apostle and the church leadership, which they could have kept for themselves and for their pleasure, but chose to give it out freely on their own accord even when they were physically poor, that through the abundance of their provisions, their brethren in Jerusalem might be blessed.
THINGS TO NOTE:
1. Wealth is not in how much you have stored up for yourself and family, but how much you have given out for the welfare and benefit of others.
2. The lifestyle of giving is a path of blessings.
3. Giving should be done out of freewill not under compulsion or through manipulation. Jesus Christ gave His life freely for us, and the churches in the New Testament just like the Church in Macedonia exhibited this trait also.
