MODULE 10 THE NEW TESTAMENT WAY TO DEAL WITH YOUR HUMAN ENEMIES BY EVANGELIST OGHOGHO IKPONMWOSA (PHD)
In this module we shall look at the statements Jesus made which directly changed a law found in the Old Testament.
Let us read the statements as contained in Matthew 5:38-42.
38You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.
39But I say to you, Do not resist the evil man [who injures you]; but if anyone strikes you on the right jaw or cheek, turn to him the other one too.
40And if anyone wants to sue you and take your undershirt (tunic), let him have your coat also.
41And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two [miles].
42Give to him who keeps on begging from you, and do not turn away from him who would borrow [at interest] from you.
Clearly in these statements Jesus changed the Old Testament law of an eye for an eye, tooth for tooth found in Ex. 21:24-25.
He aligned it with the New Testament law of LOVE He came to establish.
Each time I read through this scripture, I realize how much I need to submit to the authority and Lordship of the Holy Spirit so that He can help me continue to deny myself of selfish pleasures, take up my cross daily and follow Jesus.
In the Old Testament, they were righteous for taking revenge on their human enemies or paying them back the evil thing they did to them.
However Jesus in this scripture directly instructs us not to do so.
Rather He gave us the instructions to be rather willing to make loss than to get into strife with those who seek to treat us badly.
He wants us to rather suffer earthly loss than stand the risk of breaking the New Testament law of LOVE He came to establish.
No matter how difficult following these instructions seems, we must follow and do them if we are true followers of Jesus Christ.
The good news is that God has given us the Holy Spirit who sheds God's love in our hearts (Rom 5:5) so that we can love the 'unloveable' and do what Jesus said we should.
We shall look at another case of how Jesus clearly in His words and action differentiated between the Old and New Testaments in the next module.
