MODULE 7 THE NEW TESTAMENT WAY TO DEAL WITH YOUR HUMAN ENEMIES BY EVANGELIST OGHOGHO IKPONWOSA (PHD)
In this module we shall look at what Jesus said about a woman who was caught in the act of adultery. Let us read through the story.
John 8:3-12
3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,
4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.
5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?
6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.
7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.
9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.KJV
It is funny that the man was not accused along with the woman. The Scribes and Pharisees brought her to Jesus and wanted to tempt Him with her case.
They knew that Jesus had been teaching on love and forgiveness hence they felt He would find it difficult to agree with the law of Moses which required that the woman be condemned to death.
They quoted Moses’ law for Jesus which required them to stone the woman to death.
They were also careful to inform Jesus that she was caught in the very act hence the proof that she was guilty of the offence was clear.
Jesus knew their evil motive hence He would not answer them but kept writing on the ground as if He did not hear what they said.
When they continued asking him the same question, He lifted up himself, and told them that anyone among them who is without sin should first cast a stone at her.
His words were spoken with so much authority that they were all convicted by their own conscience for what they themselves had done wrong hence they dropped their stones and left one after the other.
Only the accused woman was left there with Jesus. All her accusers who wanted to apply the Old Testament Law against her had backed off.
Jesus then rose and told her that He did not condemn her as the law would require them to do. However He gave her the instruction to go and sin no more.
Verse 11-12 of John chapter 8 tells us that Jesus forgiveness was not a license for her to return to her sinful life but was an invitation to her to follow Him so that she will no longer walk in darkness but she can now have the light of life.
Clearly Jesus did not follow the Old Testament Law of Moses in this story but stood with the law of love He came to establish in the New Testament.
We shall look at another case in the next module
