MODULE 9 THE NEW TESTAMENT WAY TO DEAL WITH YOUR HUMAN ENEMIES BY EVANGELIST OGHOGHOR IKPONWOSA (PHD)
In this module we shall look at the story of a Samaritan village that rejected Jesus and His disciples.
In this event, Jesus demonstrated an attitude very different from that of Renowned Old Testament Prophets like Elijah and Elisha. Let us read the story.
Luke 9:51-56
51Now when the time was almost come for Jesus to be received up [to heaven], He steadfastly and determinedly set His face to go to Jerusalem.
52And He sent messengers before Him; and they reached and entered a Samaritan village to make [things] ready for Him;
53But [the people] would not welcome or receive or accept Him, because His face was [set as if He was] going to Jerusalem.
54And when His disciples James and John observed this, they said, Lord, do You wish us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, [s]even as Elijah did ? [II Kings 1:9-16.]
55But He turned and rebuked and severely censured them. [t]He said, You do not know of what sort of spirit you are,
56For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them [u][from the penalty of eternal death]. And they journeyed on to another village.
In this event, we can clearly see the attitude of Jesus towards those who reject Him. I personally believe that the villagers must have been really hostile to them which made James and John very angry.
However Jesus didn't approve of the request of James and John to send down fire on the village people who rejected Jesus just as Elijah did on the soldiers who tried to capture him.
Jesus rebuked them severely for having such a bad heart.
He however recognized the ignorance of His disciples on what He came to do which was to save men's lives and never to destroy them no matter how bad they are.
According to the words of Jesus, the manner of spirit we are made of in the New Testament is different from that of Elijah who called down fire on his human enemies.
Jesus made it clear that the manner of spirit we are made of in the New Testament is that which seeks for the salvation of the Lost no matter how bad they presently are or treat us.
Is Jesus our standard for living our Christian life? If our answer is yes, then we must carry the same attitude He displayed when dealing with those who opposed Him.
We shall look at another case of how Jesus clearly in His words and action differentiated between the Old and New Testaments in the next module.
