MODULE 15: THE NEW TESTAMENT WAY TO DEAL WITH YOUR HUMAN ENEMIES BY EVANGELIST OGHOGHOR IKPONMWOSA (PHD)
In the last module, we clearly showed scriptures where Jesus Christ the Head of the New Testament Church gave His own law or commandment which is LOVE.
In this module we shall look at where the early Apostles re-echoed the message of love which Jesus gave to us. Let us begin with Apostle Paul.
In 1st Corinthians chapter 12, Apostle Paul devoted a great deal of time to teach the Corinthian believers the things they needed to know about spiritual and ministry gifts. He knew how excited they would be to know that they could operate these gifts hence he immediately told them that there was a more excellent way than operating spiritual gifts and being called into the ministry.
He told them that this is the way that they must follow (1Cor 14:1). Following this way is following the example of Christ and His doctrine (1Cor 11:1, Galatians 6:1-2, 2 John 1:9).
Apostle Paul emphasized that it is possible to operate spiritual gifts and yet not have love. I can speak in tongues of men and that of Angels and yet not have love.
I can have the gift of Prophecy and be able to fathom all mysteries and all knowledge and yet not have love. I can have faith that can move mountains and yet not have love.
A surprising illustration he gave was when he said it is possible to demonstrate a charitable act like giving all I have to the poor and surrendering my body to be burned and yet not have love! How can this be possible?
Yes, I can choose to engage in charitable ventures for a selfish reason hence I may give but not in love. I may even die for someone or a nation for the selfish reason of being immortalized but not because of my love for such an individual or my nation.
He emphatically stated that doing these things without love has no profit. It is a complete waste of time, energy and resources. We have no reward if we do what we do without LOVE!
How can this be possible? How can I be used by God to prophesy, remove mountains, etc. and yet not have any profit from them?
The truth is that love is more excellent than operating spiritual gifts and being called to the ministry.
Love is the underlying factor that determines whether we and our services are acceptable before God.
Everything we do is useless to God if they are done without love! Love is that which is perfect which has now come (1 Cor. 13:10).
Why is love this important? Why does God place so much value on the way of love? The answer is very clear.
1. LOVE is the one commandment or LAW of the New Testament which fulfils all the LAWS of the Old Testament (Romans 13:8-10).
2. It is the LAW of Christ (Gal 6:1-2)
.
3. Faith, as powerful as it is can only work by love (Gal 5:6),
4. Love is the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22). Notice that fruit is used not fruits in Galatians 5:22. There is one fruit which has all other virtues as its expression. If I love I would be joyful, have peace, be patient and so on (I Cor. 13:4-7).
6. We are filled with all the fullness of God as we come to know the love of God and walk in it (Eph.3:17-19).
7. It is a spiritual weapon we put on as a breast plate (1Thess 5:8).
8. LOVE has been shed abroad in our hearts (Roma 5:5) and we are given the spirit of love so we can walk in it (2Timothy1:7).
Clearly Apostle Paul was not careful to re-echo what Jesus said about love. We shall look at the account of Apostle John in the next module.
