MODULE 19 THE NEW TESTAMENT WAY TO DEAL WITH YOUR HUMAN ENEMIES BY EVANGELIST OGHOGHOR IKPONMWOSA (PHD)
In this module we shall continue looking at scriptures where Apostle John re-echoed what Jesus said about love.
1 John 3:10-11
10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.KJV
1 John 3:14-15
14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
In this scripture Apostle John was inspired by the Holy Spirit to tell us that there is a way to know the Children of God and the Children of the devil.
He said anyone who does not do righteousness is not of God. What does he mean by doing righteousness?
Did we not become righteous by faith (Romans 3:21-22, 2Cor. 5:21)?
Apostle John is simply letting us know that it is not enough to become righteous the day we became saved, we must walk in righteousness or in the Spirit or do righteousness by bringing forth the fruits of righteousness (Hebrews 12:11, Philippians 1:11) which is synonymous with the fruit of the Spirit as listed in Gal 5:22-25. Remember that the fruit of the spirit is love expressed in all its divers’ forms.
Apostle John did not leave us confused about this because he immediately tells us that doing
righteousness and not hating our brother (or loving our brother) is how to know that we are Children of God. To do righteousness is to walk in love!
He again emphasized that the message that we have been given from the beginning (that is the message we have been given by Jesus Himself) is that we should love one another.
He proceeded to tell us that we know that we have passed from death to life because we love the brethren and anyone who is not walking in love is abiding in death. In other words, we remain spiritually alive if we are walking in love but we die spiritually or are abiding in death if we are not walking in love.
He was re-echoing the teachings of Jesus in John 15:1-12 and the story of the prodigal son (Luke15:11-32) who became dead and lost when he broke fellowship with his father.
So that we are not left in confusion, Apostle John came out very clear that someone who is walking in hatred (or not walking in love) is a murderer and he emphatically stated that we know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
What he is actually saying here is that someone who hates his brother or who is not walking in love is spiritually dead and does not have eternal life in him. He has been disgrafted or broken off from the life of the vine. These are very serious statements we can’t ignore or push away.
We can’t afford not to walk in love. Thank God we have the Holy Spirit in us who is ever ready to empower us to walk in love. He is the one to do it through us. All we need to do is to learn to allow Him do it through us.
