The inaugural service of the Mosaic law which heralds it's operation was carried out using the blood of calves and goats which foreshadows the death of the testator, serving as a copy or shadow of the blood of Jesus Christ, Who is the mediator of the New Convenant.
Exodus 24:8 [NLT]:
Then Moses took the blood from the basins and splattered it over the people, declaring, “Look, this blood confirms the covenant the LORD has made with you in giving you these instructions.”
This marked the kick off of the Mosaic law, and by the blood of the convenant the children of Israel were made subject to all things with respect to the provisions of the law in regards to regulations and divine worship.
Hebrews 9:1 [NLT]:
That first covenant between God and Israel had regulations for worship and a place of worship here on earth.
The place of worship was made up of three sections, the outer court, and a tabernacle which contained two rooms which were separated by a veil. The first room is called the Holy place, and after the veil comes the second room which is called the most Holy Place.
Hebrews 9:2 [NLT]:
There were two rooms in that Tabernacle. In the first room were a lampstand, a table, and sacred loaves of bread on the table. This room was called the Holy Place.
Hebrews 9:3 [NLT]:
Then there was a curtain, and behind the curtain was the second room called the Most Holy Place.
Furthermore, the Mosaic law also came with the ordination of the levitical priesthood [The Levites of the house of Levy] who operated in the Holy place performing their services as required by the law, but only the high priest was permitted to go into the most Holy Place, offering a blood sacrifice for himself first, before the congregation once a year.
Hebrews 9:7 [NLT]:
But only the high priest ever entered the Most Holy Place, and only once a year. And he always offered blood for his own sins and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance.
The most Holy place was not accessible to all, but to only the high priest who himself had to offer a blood sacrifice for himself, because access could not be granted to all when the veil was still in place and the first tabernacle still actively in operation.
Hebrews 9:8 [NLT]:
By these regulations the Holy Spirit revealed that the entrance to the Most Holy Place was not freely open as long as the Tabernacle and the system it represented were still in use.
These sacrifices where offered every year by the high priest because the sacrifices could not make perfect the conscience of the worshippers, hence it had to be repeated every year. This is because the law brought about sin consciousness, hence the worshippers could not get rid of their guilt before God, or see themselves blameless before God, which necessitated that the sacrifice be repeated every year.
Hebrews 9:9 [NLT]:
This is an illustration pointing to the present time. For the gifts and sacrifices that the priests offer are not able to cleanse the consciences of the people who bring them.
More also, the Mosaic law demanded for animal sacrifices for sin offerings, not because God desired it or that it pleased Him, but because it was a requirement of the law.
Hebrews 10:8 [NLT]:
First, Christ said, “You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings or burnt offerings or other offerings for sin, nor were you pleased with them” (though they are required by the law of Moses).
The law [ The Old Convenant] as a shadow of the New convenant was revealed in Jesus Christ, who showed to the world the real pattern of the tabernacle which existed in heaven.
In the next part we shall be looking at how the tabernacle of the law foreshadowed the tabernacle in heaven with respect to the divine order of the priests in the New Convenant.
