In our modern day reality, when the word "deliverance" is mentioned, the average believer captures the imagination of what is called a "deliverance service" in some churches, hence they downplay its importance and overall implication on the life of every believer, by giving it a misconstrued meaning.
In the study of the subject of deliverance, there are two schools of thought;
1. The believers in Christ who believe that Jesus Christ has delivered all who believe, hence there is no need for any other deliverance,
2. Believers who are of the opinion that Christ has performed the deliverance, but a believer still needs deliverance from God.
Moreover, inorder to understand the actual meaning to which deliverance is applied to the life of a believer, we would examine four major standpoints which are;
1. Salvation [to rescue].
2. Redemption [to buy back].
3. Preservation [ to protect].
4. Restoration [ to make whole].
These four key words aforementioned, gives a balanced insight and approach to what deliverance is as it pertains to what Jesus Christ did on the cross, and how it affects all believers in Christ. The first item on the list is salvation, and what is salvation?
Salvation is an act of deliverance where mankind is rescued from the nature of sin, and it's wages which is death.
John 3:16 [AMP]:
For God so [greatly] loved and dearly prized the world, that He [even] gave His [One and] only begotten Son, so that whoever believes and trusts in Him [as Savior] shall not perish, but have eternal life.
This is a literal shift from the dominion of darkness to the kingdom of God through His Son, Jesus Christ. This act of deliverance is eternal in nature because the sacrifice that took place on the cross of Calvary cannot be undone, for it was done once and for all.
Hebrew 10:12 [AMP]:
whereas Christ, having offered the one sacrifice [the all-sufficient sacrifice of Himself] for sins for all time, SAT DOWN [signifying the completion of atonement for sin] AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD [the position of honor].
The word Salvation comes from the Greek word sótéria which connotes an act of deliverance or rescue, which in this case represents God's rescue effort to save mankind from the danger of an impending destruction which was caused by the nature of sin.
At Jericho, Jesus Christ came in contact with a task collector named Zacheus, and He declared salvation upon his household, stating that Zacheus was a son of Abraham, and that He [Christ] came looking for the lost.
Luke 19:9 [AMP]:
Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this household, because he, too, is a [spiritual] son of Abraham;
Luke 19:20 [AMP]:
for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
THINGS TO NOTE:
1. Salvation is an act of deliverance.
2. God rescued mankind on His own terms.
