Understanding the Abrahamic Covenant.

POINT 2:

A change of Name to reflect the Covenant of God upon his life. [Genesis 17:5].

One of the things I have found to be very consistent in scriptures, is the intentionality in the naming of Children. In the records of scriptures, it becomes very clear that names were not just given as a sign of identity, but in the foretelling of the destiny of the bearer. In essence, names bore a more prophetic approach, which at times violated family ancestry and norms.

The name Avram (Abram) as translated from the Hebrews lexicon, refers to EXALTED FATHER. It was a prophetic name, which gave an insight of his selection that positioned him for a visitation by God. I would have been surprised if he was not visited by God, because his name, Abram, already gave a clue as to who he will become, but has not become, because the time of his visitation was not yet come.

Genesis 17:4

[4]“As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations.

The name change of Abram to Abraham by God, was to reflect the Covenant that God bestowed on him. The Covenant brought about the name change, which reflects the vision, plan and purpose that God has for him and his descendants.

Genesis 17:5

[5]No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations.

THINGS TO NOTE:

1. The Covenant on Abraham by God, came by the Word of God, and the name change from Abram to Abraham, also came by the Word of God. 

2. The Covenant of God is in His Word, and the fulfilment of that Covenant is by His Word.

3. God will never commit to a Covenant without His Word.
