THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS [Pt 5]
- Awe Hilary
Last year while I was on evangelism with members of my unit in Church, we came across a sister, and while my team mate spoke to her about Jesus Christ, it was discovered that she was a believer. However, during the interaction it was discovered that this sister was living with guilt and regret, finding it difficult to forgive herself for the wrongs she had done. This affected her seriously, and my female colleague counselled her and assured her that she has been forgiven by God.
Are you in that situation where you feel that your sins are too horrible to be forgiven by God? I have good news for you, which is a consciousness I would want you to live with all the days of your life, and it is;
A man or woman who genuinely turns to God, and surrenders his or her life to Him through Jesus Christ, has his or her sins completely forgiven by God.
Romans 3:25-26
[25]whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed,
[26]to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
Salvation is by faith in Jesus Christ Who died for our sins, and this infers that we believe in what He has done, and not what we are doing. The sinner had nothing to offer God, absolutely nothing, but rather God gave him a free gift in salvation, where the previous sins of the sinner is forgiven, and Christ stands in the present time justifying the forgiven.
Romans 5:8-9
[8]But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
[9]Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.
While the forgiveness of sins is a one time action, the justification of the forgiven is an acquittal of the charges that would have been brought forward by the Law. Hence the Law no longer has prosecutorial powers to convict the forgiven anymore.
Jesus Christ is the justifier of the forgiven, which means that the forgiven rely on the integrity of the personality of Jesus Christ through faith, Who have fulfilled the requirements of the Law, to become the righteousness of God. So in essence, the believer in Christ displays the righteousness of Jesus Christ, through which he or she was justified.
Philippians 3:9
[9]and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;
THINGS TO NOTE:
1. The believer in Jesus Christ comes from a standpoint of forgiveness and not condemnation.
2. The believer in Jesus Christ displays the righteousness of Christ and not self righteousness.
3. The forgiven are free from the nature of sin and it's consequences.
.....TO BE CONTINUED.
