In this module we shall look at the second case of God’s judgment passed on those who sinned as found in the New Testament.
CASE TWO: ELYMAS THE SORCERER
Apostle Paul in Acts 13:6-12 gave us an example of how to deal with people who take sides with the devil to hinder God’s work. By the leading of the Holy Spirit he commanded Elymas (Bar-jesus) to be blinded for a season (for some time) because he tried to hinder the deputy of the country from hearing and accepting God’s word.
This action will show to Elymas the sorcerer and those around that the power he trusted in is not the ultimate. He will have the opportunity of surrendering his life to Jesus Christ due to this incidence because he did not die immediately. The deputy also believed in Jesus Christ after seeing what was done to Elymas.
We are taught in God’s word that the church can hand over people who blaspheme or do evil to satan for the destruction of the body so that they can learn how not to blaspheme and their souls can be saved (1Cor 5:1-5, 1Tim 1:19-20).
Notice clearly that the purpose of the church delivering them to satan for destruction of the flesh is so that they can learn how not to blaspheme and be saved. The torment which these people will go through will help them to learn not to blaspheme but to discover the truth so that they can repent. Satan and the difficult situations which these evil people have to go through will be used by God to help them find repentance so they can be saved.
