When Expectations are met with Disappointments
Expectations precede great successes, many will argue. It is one of the ingredients that some consider as an impetus to achieving whatsoever the heart is set to do. Without it, one might settle for less or just anything. Questions like 'what are your expectations?' are not strange in some official sphere that are known for serious business. By effectively answering these questions, they are assured they can bank on you for innovative ideas and commitment that can launch their company to the next level.
Good as this may be for a corporate entity, it is also of greater good for individuals. Hence, we have personal plans and goals. We have proposals and charts. We even have an evaluating system to measure and ascertain our progress. While this is good, in short, while this is great, marvellous and amazing, however, there is a line of caution that one must tread carefully.
Which is? Response or reaction to an unmet expectation. We know how these expectations can be cooked up with an unapologetic euphoria. It leaves us in a state of elation and bliss. We are filled with ideas and probable outcome of our expectations. We make plans ahead within the context of a realised expectation. This is not bad, in reality, our expectations must be complemented with this positivism.
But when these expectations are greeted with disappointments; how do we react? Well, countless times it has left me in the my room for days with my bed being my only companion. Other days, tears came rolling down and seem never to stop. Some harder punches left me in great despair that took away the will to ever try again.
I know some of us may have responded in contrary ways than the ones stated above, since we respond to events differently.
Life is what it is. We make plans and we are filled with great possibilities, but things turn out a little bit different, maybe for some, a whole lot different in some other events. When this happens, never, never, never lose the will to go on.
Don't be filled with despair that you become too fearful and timid to birth another expectation.
Many who are successful today didn't get there because they never had their hopes dashed—many stories of these great men affirmed they did—but they aspired for greater things when the previous expectations failed.
We win and win and win, that's a truism, only that we must also be conscious of the fact that there are some winnings that isn't for us, because some great winnings lie ahead.
When the tides are against you, it will be preternatural to say don't be cast down, but don't stay downcast. Pick up yourself quickly and trust that He who sails the Ship has promised you a safe landing.
Job 11:17-18
And [your] life shall be clearer than the noonday and rise above it; though there be darkness, it shall be as the morning.
And you shall be secure and feel confident because there is hope; yes, you shall search about you, and you shall take your rest in safety.
