It is no more a news that there is an increase in consumption of drugs amongst our young people. In December 2017, it was reported that 3 million bottles of codeine are consumed daily in Kano and Jigawa States only. More than ever before we need as people to declare emergencies on this issue. This post is to bring closer to us some of the other drugs young people consume and the various components they are made from.
Skoochies is a ‘street cocktail’ made popular by the various red-cup flaunting artistes. And it is the official drink of the African shrine in Ikeja. The drink is simply a combo of zobo/black currant, marijuana, gin, lime and or codeine. Some add cucumber to make it look appealing to naive drinkers. When taken chilled, anyone will surely ask for more. The aftermath effect is a level of 'high' that is unrivaled. The drink is served in most top clubs in Lagos these days. It is served in parties on campuses and some supposedly cool parties. It is rated as one of the dangerous drinks of Lagos.
Gutter Water: In his latest song called 'Science Student', Olamide sang about a destructive drink called 'Gutter Water' or 'Omi-gutter'. According to NewsBreak website, “What Olamide meant by 'chemicals' is the mixture of Parkalin, Tramadol, Valium 5, with Coca Cola or water and ‘omi gutter’ (gutter water) is the mixture of different types of cannabis strains, such as Marijuana, Skunk and Loud, along with dry gin. As we speak, there are variations of the combination, young people now do a combination of Codeine + Refnol +Tramadol + Weed + Juice . For your information, Refnol is the date-rape drug that has been banned in some other countries. A young adult died of overdose of this some months back in Ikorodu area of Lagos.
Monkey-Tail: In one of his songs, Olamide of YBNL record made popular this nasty blend. It is a rough blend of the locally made gin and Indian hemp/marijuana. The weed is soaked in the gin for day and served in shots after the weed is well extracted.
Apart from all these, young boys also take codeine which is called blunts on the street. Also the daily consumption of Tramadol, hemp and herbs in gins. So with this, our boys cannot just trust the contents of bottle water carried around by their peers. While some have called for outright ban of Codeine and other drugs, it is sure such knee-jerk reaction doesnt work. We all have to be up and doing to educate our young boys on the danger inherent in consumption of this chemicals. This is a duty we cannot delegate.
What practical ways do you think we can employ to help this our generation?
