THE DANGERS OF DEAD WORKS pt 1 - Awe Hilary

The believers in Christ Jesus, are continually called unto maturity and awareness of who they are in God through Jesus Christ. This implies that they have a responsibility to continually grow in the grace of God through the knowledge of what was done on the cross and how it applies to them through faith.

Hebrews 6:1 [AMP]:

Therefore let us get past the elementary stage in the teachings about the Christ, advancing on to maturity and perfection and spiritual completeness, [doing this] without laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God.

Dead works are actions that are not done in faith to God through Jesus Christ, hence they are unfruitful to the life of the believer, because they are done outside the revelation of the Christ. This includes religious activities of the Law or any resemblance of it, and also boastings of self which does not depict a reliance on God or His exaltation.

Phillipians 3:13 [AMP]:

Brothers and sisters, I do not consider that I have made it my own yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead.

In the book of Acts, some men who had believed in Jesus Christ, who were former practioners of the Law, taught the brethren that they needed to be circumcized according to the customs of Moses for them to be saved.

Acts 15:5 [AMP]:

But some from the sect of the Pharisees who had believed [in Jesus as the Messiah] stood up and said, “It is necessary to circumcise the Gentile converts and to direct them to observe the Law of Moses.”

#Danger1: An unbearable burden

- Dead works are a hindrance to the grace of God in the life of a believer, because it attempts to disrupt the liberty of God through Christ by placing a burden or a heavy yoke on such a person through the emphasis of works as a means to attain salvation.

Acts 15:10 [AMP]:

Now then, why are you testing God by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we have been able to endure?

The service of God becomes a burden instead of a life of freedom in Christ Jesus.

...... To be continued.
