Title: WHAT SPIRITUAL HERITAGE ARE YOU LEAVING BEHIND FOR YOUR CHILDREN?

Text: 1 Kings 21-22

Memory Verse: 1Kings 22:14

*THE MESSAGE*

The life of every man or woman is a seed that outgrows them to generations beyond their earthly existence. This implies that a person's disposition to life has the capacity to outlive him or her, hence causing a generation to become beneficiaries to what have been sown before them.

The book of Proverbs speaks about a good man leaving behind an inheritance for his grand children, and many have assumed that the passage speaks primarily about the physical structures of wealth, while neglecting the spiritual component.

Proverbs 13:22

[22]A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, But the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.

The author of Proverbs makes use of the word "good" to represent the man who leaves an inheritance for his grand children, which is contrasted with the "sinner" who looses his wealth to the righteous. In essence, the defining factor is not about the physical structures of wealth which is also available to the sinner, but rather the transference of godly virtues which operate within the ambits of the law of righteousness, that are both physical and spiritual.

Job 27:16-17

[16]Though he heaps up silver like dust, And piles up clothing like clay—

[17]He may pile it up, but the just will wear it, And the innocent will divide the silver.

God wants us to be seeds that would influence our generations positively, both spiritually and physically with the emphasis on righteousness, and not on the acquisition of material possessions.

There is a story of a King called Ahab, and the scriptures record that there was none like him who sold himself to do wickedness in the land where he reigned.

1 Kings 21:25

[25]But there was no one like Ahab who sold himself to do wickedness in the sight of the Lord, because Jezebel his wife stirred him up.

Despite his wealth as the king of Israel, his wickedness became a reproach to his generation, which led to the extermination of all the male children in that lineage.

1 Kings 21:19-22

[19]You shall speak to him, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Have you murdered and also taken possession?” ’ And you shall speak to him, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord: “In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth, dogs shall lick your blood, even yours.” ’ ”

[20]So Ahab said to Elijah, “Have you found me, O my enemy?” And he answered, “I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do evil in the sight of the Lord:

[21]‘Behold, I will bring calamity on you. I will take away your posterity, and will cut off from Ahab every male in Israel, both bond and free.

[22]I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, because of the provocation with which you have provoked Me to anger, and made Israel sin.’

Moreover, years after King Ahab died, the prophecy of the Lord came upon his sons.

2 Kings 10:6-8

[6]Then he wrote a second letter to them, saying: If you are for me and will obey my voice, take the heads of the men, your master’s sons, and come to me at Jezreel by this time tomorrow. Now the king’s sons, seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, who were rearing them.

[7]So it was, when the letter came to them, that they took the king’s sons and slaughtered seventy persons, put their heads in baskets and sent them to him at Jezreel.

[8]Then a messenger came and told him, saying, “They have brought the heads of the king’s sons.” And he said, “Lay them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until morning.”

Are you aware that every action you take as a parent is a seed you are sowing to your generations? and many have become beneficiaries of the seeds that were sown by generations before them. This is why every individual must prioritize and emphasize the need to  transfer spiritual virtues of righteousness to the generations beyond them, because that is what sustains a godly inheritance from generation to generation.

PRACTICAL STEPS FOR A GOOD INHERITANCE

1. Obedience to God.

2. Embracing the right style of living in righteousness.

3. Avoid the company of the wicked and all evil acts.

4. Plan for your generation by sowing good seeds of both spiritual and material virtues.

5. Pray for your generation, and consecrate them to God.

PRAYER:

1. Lord, I plead the blood of Jesus Christ and I disconnect myself from every evil seed that was sown in previous generations before me, in Jesus name.

2. I declare that only the Word of God and it's provisions are permitted to find expression in my life, in Jesus name, amen 🙏.

3. I am debt free, Jesus Christ has paid my debt in full, hence I cannot eat the soar grapes my father's and mothers ate, in Jesus name, amen 🙏.

REMEMBER:

The wealth of the sinner is not sustainable and is stored up for the righteous.

Righteousness is the sustainer of a godly inheritance and heritage.
